Treatment

Urethral catheterization or Suprapubic cystostomy (SPC) to relieve urinary symptoms.

Adrenergic Alpha Blockers:

tamsulosin (PO) 0.4mg 24hourly OR alfuzosin (PO) 10mg 24hourly

5-alpha Reductase Inhibitors
finasteride (PO) 5mg 24hourly OR dutasteride (PO) 0.5mg 24hourly

Anticholinergics
oxybutynin (PO) 5mg 8hourly for patients with persistent urgency despite above medications

Definitive treatment of BPH is surgical correction which can be done as follows:

• Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is recommended for prostate weighing up to 75g and those
• Open Prostatectomy is recommended for prostate weighing more than 75g.
