ABRUPTIO PLACENTA

Refers to early separation of the placenta after 28th week of gestation before the onset of labour. 

Types

It can be categorized based on the following aspects:

Extent of separation

Partial placental abruption which refers to incomplete separation of the plant with the rest of it remaining attached to endometrium. 

Complete placental abruption which is the total separation of the placenta from the uterine wall.

Location of separation

Marginal placental abruption which refers to separation occurring at the periphery of the placenta. 

Central placental abruption refers to central detachment of the placenta tissue from the uterine wall.

Nature of bleeding

Revealed abruptio placenta which refers to evident active prevaginal bleeding.

Concealed abruptio placenta which refers to absence of per vaginal bleeding where by all blood is retained in retroplacental space.
