A urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs when bacteria or sometimes other microbes enter the urinary tract, begin to grow and cause infection in the upper urinary tract(pyelonephritis) or lower urinary tract (cystitis ). It may be complicated or uncomplicated. Uncomplicated cystitis is a lower UTI in a non-pregnant woman of reproductive and who has a normal urinary tract. All other UTIs should be regarded as complicated.
