Stages

Trachoma can go through the following stages/Phases:

Trachomatous Inflammation – Follicular (TF)

This is the first stage in which there is presence of five or more follicles in the upper tarsal (Palpebral) conjunctiva. Follicles are seen as whitish, grey or yellow elevations, paler than the surrounding conjunctiva.

Trachomatous Inflammation – Intense (TI)

This is the second stage in which the upper tarsal (palpebral) conjunctiva appears red, rough and thickened. The blood vessels are masked by a diffuse inflammatory infiltration or follicles.

Trachomatous Scarring (TS)

This is the third stage in which follicles disappear, leaving scars which are seen as white lines, bands or patches in the tarsal(palpebral) conjunctiva.

Trachomatous Trichiasis (TT)

This is the fourth stage in which eyelashes rub against the cornea and cause ulcerations and chronic inflammation.

Corneal Opacity (CO)

It is the last stage in which cornea gradually looses its transparency, leading to visual impairment and blindness.
