Epidemiology

 The prevalence of cataract increases with age, from 3.9% at age 55–64 years to 92.6% at age 80 years and older. Paediatric cataracts are one of the most common causes of treatable childhood blindness, with an estimated prevalence ranging from one to six per 10000 live births.
