Types of wound healing

Healing by Primary intention (Primary closure)

It occurs when there is minimal tissue damage whereby healing takes place by the approximation of tissue edges with suture, staples, wound sealant etc

Healing by Secondary intention (Secondary closure)

It occurs in wounds that are already infected and are usually left open and allowed to heal by epitheliazation and wound contraction. It is a slow process recommended in infected wounds, excessive trauma, tissue loss, or inability to re- approximate the tissue.

Healing by tertiary intention (Delayed primary closure)

It is recommended in heavily contaminated wounds likely to develop infection if closed primarily. The wound is then left for 3-5 days undergoing dressing to clear the anticipated infection. The wound can then be closed and allowed to heal, producing a wound with characteristics similar to primary closure.
