Overwhelming Post-Splenectomy Infection (OPSI)

Refers to a severe form of sepsis in Asplenic patients due to inability to mount a normal immunological response against encapsulated organisms, such as Pneumococcus, Meningococcus, and H. Influenzae.

Therefore, any asplenic patient, including those post-splenectomy, should receive vaccinations against these three organisms. In addition, prophylactic Penicillin V should be considered (this may not be required lifelong in low-risk patients)
