The Gustilo-Anderson classification can be used to classify open fractures
Type 1
- Caused by low energy trauma
- The wound measures less than1cm
- Clean wound with minimal or no contamination at all.
- Minimal soft tissue damage
- Minimal fracture comminution
- No periosteal stripping
- Intact Neurovasculature
Type 2
- Caused by moderate energy trauma
- The wound measures between1cm to 10cm
- Moderate contamination.
- Moderate soft tissue damage
- Moderate fracture comminution
- No periosteal stripping
- Intact Neurovasculature
Type 3A
- Caused by high energy trauma.
- The wound measures larger than 10cm.
- Extensive contamination.
- Extensive soft tissue damage
- Severe fracture comminution
- Significant periosteal stripping
- Intact Neurovasculature
Type 3B
- Caused by high energy trauma.
- The wound measures larger than 10cm.
- Extensive contamination.
- Extensive soft tissue damage
- Severe fracture comminution
- Significant periosteal stripping
- It requires free tissue flap or rotational flap coverage
- Intact Neurovasculature
Type 3C
- Caused by high energy trauma.
- The wound measures larger than 10cm.
- Extensive contamination.
- Extensive soft tissue damage
- Severe fracture comminution
- Significant periosteal stripping
- It requires free tissue flap or rotational flap coverage
- Significant Neurovascular damage.
