Gustilo-Anderson classification

The Gustilo-Anderson classification can be used to classify open fractures

Type 1

  • Caused by low energy trauma
  • The wound measures less than1cm
  • Clean wound with minimal or no contamination at all.
  • Minimal soft tissue damage
  • Minimal fracture comminution
  • No periosteal stripping
  • Intact Neurovasculature

Type 2

  • Caused by moderate energy trauma
  • The wound measures between1cm to 10cm
  • Moderate contamination.
  • Moderate soft tissue damage
  • Moderate fracture comminution
  • No periosteal stripping
  • Intact Neurovasculature

Type 3A

  • Caused by high energy trauma.
  • The wound measures larger than 10cm.
  • Extensive contamination.
  • Extensive soft tissue damage
  • Severe fracture comminution
  • Significant periosteal stripping
  • Intact Neurovasculature

Type 3B

  • Caused by high energy trauma.
  • The wound measures larger than 10cm.
  • Extensive contamination.
  • Extensive soft tissue damage
  • Severe fracture comminution
  • Significant periosteal stripping
  • It requires free tissue flap or rotational flap coverage
  • Intact Neurovasculature

Type 3C

  • Caused by high energy trauma.
  • The wound measures larger than 10cm.
  • Extensive contamination.
  • Extensive soft tissue damage
  • Severe fracture comminution
  • Significant periosteal stripping
  • It requires free tissue flap or rotational flap coverage
  • Significant Neurovascular damage.
