Pathophysiology

The exocrine pancreatic glands secrete inactive enzymes (pro enzymes) which are activated in small intestine. Pancreatic trauma, infection, harmful chemical exposures or autoimmunity can cause intra pancreatic activation of these enzymes before their release into the small intestine. These enzymes will digest and damage pancreatic tissue and hence stimulating inflammation of the pancreas.
