Introduction

Splenic rupture refers to a surgical emergency marked by a destruction of splenic tissue resulting into intra abdominal haemorrhage. It can be either traumatic (Most common) or non traumatic (Rare cases).

Spleen is located in the left hypochondriac region of the abdomen.

Surgical Anatomy of the spleen

Anatomical relations of the spleen

Anterior aspect-Stomach

Posterior aspect-Left hemidiaphragm and left lung at the level of between 9th to 11th ribs

Inferior aspect- colic flexure (splenic flexure)

Medial aspect-Left kidney, tail of the pancreas.

Vasculature of the spleen

Arterial supply of the spleen is made by splenic artery originating from the coeliac trunk. In the spleen splenic artery gives five branches (Which do not anastomose with each other) supplying different parts of the spleen.

Its venous drainage occurs through the splenic vein which combines with the superior mesenteric vein to form hepatic portal vein.
