Treatment

Acute otitis media

Antibiotics

Amoxiclav 625mg (Adults) or 375 (Paediatrics) 12hourly for 10daysOR

Azithromycin (PO) 500mg (Adult dose)  or 10mg/kg (Paediatric dose) 24 hourly for 5days  OR

Ceftriaxone (IV) 1 to 2 g (Adult dose) or 50 to 100mg/kg (Paediatric dose)  12hourly for 10days.

Analgesics

Paracetamol (PO) 1g 8hourly for 3days (Adult dose)  OR 15 mg/kg 8hourly (Paediatric dose)

In case of chronic suppiurative otitis media:

Keep ear dry/avoid water into the ear

Aural toileting

Ear wicking regularly, with a dry cotton wick at home

Pharmacological Treatment

Ciprofloxacin ear drops, three drops12hourly for 14days 

Hydrogen peroxide 3% ear drops: 2 to 4 drops each ear 6-8hourly for 14days OR

Boric acid ear drops: 2-4 drops each ear 6-8hourly for 14days 

Surgical treatment

Mastoidectomy, a procedure performed to remove the mastoid air cells.

Endoscopic tympanoplasty, done to reconstruct the perforated ear drum.

Tympano-mastoidectomy, a combined tympanoplasty and mastoidectomy procedure.

Ossiculoplasty, the surgical restoration of the sound transmitting mechanism of the middle ear by reconstructing the damaged ear ossicles.
