Treatment
Pharmacological treatment
Cetirizine (PO) 10mg nocte for 2 weeks AND
Normal saline (Sodium chloride 0.9%) nasal spray/drops 4 hourly for 2 weeks AND
Phenoxymethylpenicillin (PO) 500mg 8 hourly for 7 days OR
Azithromycin (PO) 500mg once daily for 3 days OR
Amoxicillin/Clavulanic acid (PO) 625mg (500mg amoxicillin, 125mg Clavulanic acid) 8 hourly for 7 days
Surgical treatment
Surgical removal of the adenoids, Adenoidectomy.
Indications
Adenoid hypertrophy causing snoring, mouth breathing, sleep apnoea syndrome or speech abnormalities
Recurrent rhinosinusitis
Chronic secretory otitis media associated with adenoid hyperplasia
Dental malocclusion. Adenoidectomy does not correct dental abnormalities but will prevent its recurrence after orthodontic treatment.
