Humid environmental conditions

Trauma or foreign body into the ear canal (cotton swabs, earplugs, hearing aids)

Dermatologic conditions such as eczema and psoriasis

Anatomical anomalies such as narrow external ear canals

Ear canal obstruction (cerumen impaction, foreign body)

Radiotherapy or chemotherapy

Immuno-incompetence.
