Classification

Clinical classification of pneumonia.

Very severe pneumonia
It presents with cough or difficulty in breathing plus at least one of the following:

  • Central cyanosis
  • Inability to breastfeed or drink, or vomiting everything
  • Convulsions, lethargy or unconsciousness
  • Severe respiratory distress.

Severe pneumonia
Cough or difficult breathing plus at least one of the following signs:

  • Lower chest wall indrawing
  • Nasal flaring
  • Grunting (in young infants).

Pneumonia

The child presents with cough or difficulty in breathing and fast breathing.

No pneumonia/Cough or Cold.

The child presents with difficulty cough which may be associated with nasal discharge, mouth breathing and even fever.
